UV Whitening

In-Office Treatment

In-office tooth whitening is performed in just one visit to our Charlotte, NC, dental practice. This is a great option if you want significantly whiter teeth as quickly as possible. During your appointment, a light-activated whitening gel with hydrogen peroxide is applied to your teeth. When exposed to UV light, a chemical reaction breaks down deep stains and discoloration. You can achieve a smile that is up to eight shades whiter in about an hour or more, depending on your individual case.

At-Home Whitening Trays

This treatment is great for patients who want to gradually whiten their teeth on a more flexible schedule. After impressions are taken of your smile, your dentist will provide you with snug-fitting, customized teeth whitening trays for use at home. This safe, effective dentistry treatment uses a bleaching gel similar to the one used in our in-office treatments, only with a milder hydrogen peroxide formula. You should see dramatic results in two to three weeks.

The Teeth Whitening Timeline

Our professional-grade bleaching system can give you a noticeably brighter smile in just one hour-long treatment. Our at-home bleaching kits can provide the same great results over the course of a few weeks.
Our professional-grade bleaching system can give you a noticeably brighter smile in just one hour-long treatment. Our at-home bleaching kits can provide the same great results over the course of a few weeks.

Initial Consultation

One of our dentists will meet with you to assess your current degree of staining and discuss your goals for your smile. They can also recommend over-the-counter products, like whitening toothpaste, that can help you maintain your results after your treatment.

In-Office Whitening

During whitening sessions at our Charlotte office, one of our dentists will apply professional-grade whitening gel to the teeth you want whitened. This gel is more powerful than over-the-counter whitening products, and it can be customized for your safety and comfort. Depending on your degree of staining, your treatment will be carried out in two to four rounds, each about 15 minutes long. By the end of your session, you can expect a markedly brighter smile.

At-Home Whitening

You will receive custom-fitted whitening trays so you can carry out your treatment on your own time. Fill the trays with whitening gel and wear them for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your dentist's recommendation. You will repeat the process daily over the course of two to three weeks. You'll probably begin to see results within the first week of your treatment, but it's important to continue whitening each day for the full treatment period if you want to achieve the best outcomes.

I have been with Dr. Porter since I was a kid. I am now 32 and have a family of my own and a little girl I will bringing when she’s old enough. My wife and I have never once had a bad experience. Everyone is so friendly and they are very professional. I would highly recommend anyone come in and take the time to have the same great experience I have each time I walk in that door.

Can Anyone Get Their Teeth Whitened? Our Dentists Will Let You Know if You Are a Good Candidate

While teeth whitening is safe and effective for most individuals with stained teeth, it is not recommended for everyone. Contact our Charlotte, NC, practice to learn if you are a good candidate for our at-home or in-office whitening treatments.

Age

Dentists don't recommend teeth whitening for anyone under 16. However, we can recommend products like whitening toothpastes that can help younger patients maintain bright smiles.

Health

Patients with gum disease or tooth decay need to have these issues treated at our Charlotte, NC, practice before whitening can begin. We offer a wide range of dentistry treatments to improve your oral health.

Restorations

If you have veneers, crowns, or dental bridges, whitening is not recommended as your natural teeth will not match the shade of your restorations.

Stain Type

Teeth whitening is highly effective at removing surface stains. However, deeper stains may not be able to be lifted through whitening. At your consultation, one of our dentists can examine your teeth to determine if whitening will work for your discoloration or if a veneer or other treatment would better suit your needs.

Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Stains

Extrinsic Dental Stains

Extrinsic stains are surface-level and are usually the result of enamel being exposed to substances such as dark beverages, colored foods, and tobacco products.

While most extrinsic stains can be prevented with good hygiene, they can still discolor your teeth despite your best efforts. For example, the sediments in your drinking water can change the color of your teeth over time. Teeth whitening is most effective for treating extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic Dental Stains

Intrinsic stains come from inside your tooth. These stains occur less frequently than extrinsic stains and are often the result of genetic conditions, extensive decay, and age. Thinning enamel can also cause these stains as the yellower interior of your tooth becomes more visible.

Teeth whitening can treat mild cases of intrinsic stains, but patients with medium-to-severe cases may need to consider alternative treatments such as veneers or crowns

Frequently Asked Questions By Patients in the Charlotte, NC, Area

How long does teeth whitening last?

The lifespan of your results can vary depending on your daily habits, the type of teeth whitening, and other factors. Professional teeth whitening can last up to two to three years while a take-home kit often lasts several months.

How effective are teeth whitening strips?

Teeth whitening strips are fairly effective at removing surface-level and mild stains. Teeth whitening strips are the second most effective method following professional in-office treatments, and the results can last up to six months or more. However, patients should not use the strips more than instructed by our dentists. Overusing the strips can hurt your teeth and make them feel sensitive.

Can hydrogen peroxide damage your teeth?

Pure hydrogen peroxide can damage your tooth enamel, but professional and dentist-approved kits use a safe amount of diluted hydrogen peroxide so it does not damage your teeth. Homemade teeth whitening remedies are not regulated, so the remedies can damage your teeth if they are not mixed or applied properly. Professionals like Dr. Charles Porter and Dr. Robert Porter know how to balance the amount of hydrogen peroxide in tooth whitening treatments so it's safe but effective.

Does teeth whitening make your teeth more sensitive?

It varies from patient to patient. Some people experience mild and temporary amounts of tooth and gum sensitivity after a teeth whitening treatment. This should quickly fade away, and any temporary sensitivity can be managed by using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. If the effects are uncomfortable and do not go away, you should contact our practice. Sometimes tooth sensitivity can be a symptom of other underlying problems.
