Restore Your Smile with Implant-supported Dentures
If you are missing most or all of your teeth, you know the impact it can have on your confidence, and your ability to chew and speak properly. At the same time, you may be hesitant to seek treatment using traditional dentures. We want you to know that you have options. Dr. Charles Porter offers innovative implant-supported dentures at our Charlotte dental office. Also known as overdentures, implant-supported dentures can replace the entire arch of your upper or lower teeth with stable, permanent prosthetics that look and feel extremely natural. Perhaps best of all, implant-supported dentures allow you to chew all the sticky, crisp, and tough foods you love, without having to worry that your dentures will slip out of place. To learn more about your candidacy for overdentures, schedule an appointment at our practice today.
The Overdentures Procedure
Overdentures are secured to dental implants. During an initial consultation, you will undergo a thorough examination with Dr. Porter which will allow him to determine your candidacy for the procedure. If you are found to be a good candidate, he will take x-rays and impressions of your mouth, and use this data to carefully plan the placement of your implants.
After performing any necessary extractions, he will surgically embed small, biocompatible titanium posts in your jaw. In some cases, implants can be placed and restored in a single day. Other patients may be better candidates for dental implants, which require three to six months of healing time before they can be restored.
A Precise, Comfortable Fit
Dr. Porter uses the highest quality materials to create our overdentures. To ensure that they fit properly and complement your appearance, he will take impressions of your gums, and also consider the symmetry and shape of your facial features. Your dentures will attach to your implants on a small bar that follows the curve of your mouth, and is secured to the implants using clips. Conversely, your denture may attach directly to the implant using snap-like fixtures.
There are a number of factors that make overdentures a preferred method of restoration over traditional dentures. Implant-supported overdentures:
- Will not slip out of place.
- Allow you to speak normally and eat foods you could not chew with traditional dentures.
- Cause less irritation than traditional dentures.
- Require no denture adhesives.
- Cover less of your palate on the top arch.
Most importantly, overdentures prevent jawbone deterioration, which is common after tooth loss. This means that implant-retained dentures can help you avoid the sunken, aged look that can occur when several teeth are missing. In short, overdentures can help you enjoy a better quality of life, and keep you feeling and looking healthier.
