Achieve a Dazzling Smile with Teeth Whitening
Even if you have impeccable dental hygiene, your teeth can lose their luster because of genetics, age, smoking, and certain beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine. Dr. Charles Porter offers a variety of teeth whitening options at our Charlotte office, providing patients with a safe, affordable, and efficient way to enhance their smiles. If stained teeth are detracting from your appearance, learn what whitening can do for you during a consultation at our practice. Book an appointment today.
Types of Whitening Whitening
As a family and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Porter is dedicated to providing a wide array of treatment options, which is why he offers both in-office and at-home whitening systems.
In-office teeth whitening is performed in just one visit. During your appointment, Dr. Porter will apply a light-activated whitening gel to your teeth, then expose it to light to active the solution. Carbamide peroxide in the gel begins a chemical reaction that breaks down deep stains and discoloration. The entire treatment can typically be performed in under two hours, and can help you achieve a smile that is up to eight shades whiter.
Dr. Porter also offers two types of take-home whitening treatments.
- Ultradent® Whitening Gel – This whitening treatment includes trays filled with strong, yet safe, whitening gel. The carbamide peroxide-based gel works similarly to our in-office treatments, though the milder formula may be preferred by patients with especially sensitive teeth. By wearing these trays for 15 minutes to an hour each day, five to ten days in a row, you can notice dramatic results.
- Custom Whitening Trays - At-home bleaching using custom-fitted trays is our most popular teeth whitening treatment. Impressions of your teeth will be used to make customized trays, which will fit snugly and comfortably around your teeth. The trays are filled with whitening gel prior to each use. Together with Dr. Porter, you will determine how long you should wear your trays to achieve optimal results.
In-office and at-home whitening systems produce comparable results, so your lifestyle, cosmetic goals, and budget will be the biggest deciding factors in which type of whitening is right for you. Because in-office treatment yields results in one visit, it’s a great option if you have time constraints. However, it may cause sensitivity in some patients and typically costs more than at-home whitening.
The main compromise of at-home whitening is that you must administer the treatment without the direct supervision of your dentist. Although you can still achieve comparable results if you finish the entire program, home whitening may not the best choice if you think you may forget to use your trays or lose interest.
Dentist-Supervised vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening
Over-the-counter whitening products are available in many forms at your local pharmacy, typically with a lower price tag than dentist-supervised whitening. So why should you pay more for professional bleaching? Quite simply, dentist-prescribed treatments produce better results. Dr. Porter has years of experience administering teeth whitening treatments, so he can guide and consult with you along the way. Those wishing to brighten their smiles usually have questions about how long to use the treatments, how to treat tooth sensitivity, and the amount of time the results should last. During your teeth whitening appointment, Dr. Porter can answer all of your questions.
