Advice From a Patient

One of the reasons I love being a dentist is having opportunities to learn from patients who are thriving. I’ve seen so many patients come in recently that appear to be in the best shape of their lives. Many have incorporated new exercise routines in the wake of Covid disruption, and have committed to positive lifestyle changes. It has been inspiring to see so many people investing in their wellbeing. Dr. Charlie saw one patient he’s seen for many years in the best shape of his life, and asked him “What’s the secret?” His simple response cut right to the point: “You can’t outwork a poor diet.”

“You can’t outwork a poor diet” may not be the most revolutionary health advice, but it points to a simple truth. Addressing poor habits can be an uphill battle. Maintaining good health is all about finding balance in healthy foods and exercise. Maybe this advice stuck with me because I may have lost a little momentum during the past months, and packed on a few pandemic pounds. Regardless, I think this nugget of wisdom is important in regards to your oral health.

Sometimes, the best oral hygiene cannot combat a poor diet. Bacteria that breaks down teeth in cavities is often fueled by the foods we eat. Snacks and beverages high in sugars and carbohydrates allow bacteria in our mouths to have a feast too, often at a detriment to our teeth and gums. Brushing twice a day, and flossing, is excellent! Please don’t stop doing that. But remember, many folks do this first thing in the morning, and the last thing before going to bed. There are meals, snacks, and drinks in between your brushing routines that give bacteria opportunities to do harm.

So what’s the takeaway? A balanced diet and exercise is important. Sure, you can still have treats occasionally. If you’ve had dental work done in the past, remember that bacteria eat when you eat. Depending on what you choose to eat, bacteria could put your dental work in jeopardy. I know Halloween is right around the corner, and I want you to have fun! I encourage you to keep a healthy day-to-day routine, even if there may be more sweets around.

Keep brushing and flossing!
